He'd come to learn that if he couldn't find one of them on the submarine, there was a good chance they'd taken the opportunity to use Cillian Quinn 's lab in Sootopolis City proper. Luckily, Rowan had been given a key from his half-brother and had access to the laboratory whenever he needed as well. [break][break]

Word had gotten around that Ceri was interested in researching the Illumina phenomenon and Rowan happened to procure one of his own in the previous months. "Knock, knock." He announced himself as he stepped into the laboratory, hands in both pockets and a rather bright Chinchou following at a short distance. "You around, Miss Glynn?"

She had come to Cillian Quinn’s laboratory to deliver the latest samples collected from shadow gene pokémon, but in true Ceri fashion, she had found herself distracted by looking through all that data once all the samples had been safely stored. Technically, she’s not even supposed to be here today, as made evident by the fact that her lab coat is still on its hanger and that her outfit isn’t exactly all that “work appropriate”. Does she care for any of that, though? Of course not.

The simple truth is that Rowan is a man of great timing, and that when he steps into the lab, she immediately smiles when seeing him.

”Oh, hey! You’re Rowan Wrynn, right?” Rocket Beast, in charge of the Sea Mauville project, but most importantly of all, oceanographer. She’s been wanting to meet him.

”I’ve heard a lot about you! What can I do for you?”

Her every word drips off a northern Galarian accent that has not faded despite her years in Hoenn, and the smile she gives him is as radiant as it is honest.

He wished he could share the sentiment of having heard much about her, but he'd been so buried in Sea Mauville that he'd fallen out of pace with some of the circulation of information. "Well, I was wonder if you'd like to take a look at my new friend with me." Rowan gestured for the Chinchou to peek out from the corner now as well, hopping up onto one of the tables. [break][break]

A hand reached out to stroke the top of the Pokémon's head, causing them to let out small squeaks of delight. "He appears to be infused with the Illumina phenomenon." True enough, the Chinchou was brighter than most, an aura of energy radiating off of their body. "What do you think?"

Chinchou. The Angler Pokémon.

Bioluminescence is already to be expected from such a species, but where most Chinchou simply shine, this one is radiant. Its whole body seems to glow, not just its antennae, and along the blue scales of its body, there is a vibrant pattern.

”Aren’t you a cute one?” Ceri smiles at the little fish before turning to go grab her lab coat and sample collection kit. ”That’s an Illumina pokémon alright. I had never seen the genes being showcased by a species that is already bioluminescent in nature, it’s pretty interesting. Did you get it from the hatchery up in 117?”

It’s where most of these unusual pokémon come from these days. She even has a couple of them herself.

Once her lab coat is on, it’s carefully that Ceri begins collecting samples, starting off with a standard Pokérus test that will only take a moment to give them its result. Then she moves on to a buccal smear for DNA, and to check the Chinchou’s Infinity Energy readings.

”Do you think that in the deep sea, this level of luminescence would prove advantageous or disadvantageous?” She asks him out of curiosity.

Being outside of the deep ocean didn't seem to bother them, the Chinchou seemed content bonding with their trainer above the surface of the water. Perhaps that was the difference between breeding a Pokémon and catching them, there were no learned behaviors to circumvent, a blank slate as it were. [break][break]

"Depends, honestly." Rowan shifted his gaze back to Ceri, offering a small shrug. "Chinchou use their light to lure in prey and communicate, mostly. The brighter light would put them at an advantage versus similar Pokémon of their species, because they'd be more attractive. Similarly, the Chinchou could also communicate with their kind at greater distances because of the increased lumosity." He took a momentary pause, realizing he was dumping a lot of information in a small span of time, allowing for a breath in the conversation before he'd continue onwards. "On the other hand, Chinchou are hardly the top of the food chain, being spotted more easily means this one could be at greater risk from a natural predator."

”Nah, we’ve been collecting samples from those ever since M.A.G.M.A started with the project. First Chinchou, though… Aaaand first aquatic pokémon, pretty sure. So, kudos on that one! Pretty fitting, I’d say.”

Ceri winks at him when saying this, following it with a light laugh. Yet, her attention is quick to return to the pokémon, as if her conversation with Rowan were no more than background noise to her work.

”Oooh yeah, that makes sense! So I guess it could end up being more of a disadvantage, then. Too easy to find for predators and what not…. Funny how evolution manages to find a way to balance those things, right?”

Notes are written on a chart displayed on a tablet, and when a notification pops up, she nods to herself. It’s then that she moves on to washing her hands, putting on a new pair of nitrile gloves before retrieving sterile equipment.

”Looks like your Chinchou is not infected with Pokérus-Y! I’m gonna need to collect a small blood sample for further analysis, though. Would you mind holding him upside-down?”

It’s always tricky knowing where’s the best spot to collect samples from each species given all their differences, but thankfully, Ceri here knows what she’s doing.

The Pokémon giggled slightly, thinking the whole thing was a game of some kind. "I've heard of Pokérus. Is it dangerous?" Viruses weren't his field of study, Rowan could treat the Pokémon but had no clue about the intricacies of diagnosing them.[break][break]

What he knew about the virus was limited to the knowledge that it first started cropping up around the time of the hatchery appearing, but he doubted that was the exact origin.

The ventral midline of the caudal peduncle is the general spot to look for when drawing blood from fish. A Chinchou has yet to develop a tail, making its proportions rather different from most fish pokémon, but it does have the potential to one day evolve into a Lanturn, and that means that when Rowan turns the little fish upside down, the spot isn't particularly difficult to find.

She’s careful when collecting the samples for Rowan’s sake. Wouldn’t be good if she annoyed the Chinchou and got him attacked… or herself, for that matter.

”Pokérus isn’t dangerous as far as we’re aware, don’t worry! Obvi there’s still a lot to learn about it, but it’s what you’d call a mutualistic virus.” She gives him a bright smile, assuming someone who likes aquatic pokémon as much as Rowan Wrynn will understand what a mutualistic relationship is, since they happen often among pokémon like these. ”The main benefit to the host is that it makes them grow much faster than usual. Pretty neat, huh?”

The Rocket Beast may not think so, but it is neat to her.

She smiles, she puts away her samples, she writes something in her chart, and only then does she offer Rowan’s Chinchou a treat.

Rowan attempted to soothe them with his voice, stroking their skin with a gentle touch. "See? All done." He smiled, flipping the Pokémon over and setting them down on the metal surface, no worse for wear. "Thanks." The Beast remarked to Ceri, noting their obvious care during the procedure. "I think that covers everything, thank you Miss Glynn." A crimson light stretched to the Chinchou as he returned it to their Pokéball, affixing it once more to his belt. "I might have some things for you in the future though, I'll keep you in mind." Rowan smiled, offering them a handshake before turning on his heel. "Have a good evening." He stepped out with a small wave, prepared to carry on with his further duties.

With the samples retrieved and the Chinchou unharmed, Ceri gives Rowan a smile, welcoming the prospect of working together one more time.

She’s not particularly formal, not seeming to care much for things like rank and protocol, but the moment Rowan and his pokémon are gone, she goes back to work —safely storing samples and completing the chart corresponding to today’s appointment.
